If Tinubu Had Said He'll Reduce His Convoy By 50%, That Means We're Making Actual Savings – Professor Chidi Odinkalu

The former national chairman of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), Professor Chidi Odinkalu, has said that if President Bola Ahmed Tinubu had said that he will reduce his convoy by 50 percent because of the way things are, that means the country would be making actual savings. He said this during an interview with Nigerian Tribune which was published on Sunday, July 16th.

He said that the way the country can free up money and make savings is by eradicating agencies and parastatals that are no longer serving their purposes.

He said -“If Tinubu had said because of the way things are, he will reduce his convoy by 50 percent, that means we are making actual savings. Or he reduces the presidential fleet from say nine to four or five aircraft. But they will not do that.”

Speaking about the N8,000 monthly palliative which Tinubu had promised to pay 12 million poor households across the country for a period of six months, Odinkalu asked how many of the poor people are documented. He said that since there is no database, they may be creating more problems with the initiative. He said that by the time they are done, they will end up alienating more people.

He added that Tinubu is having legitimacy issues, and that no matter the level of confidence they may be showing outside, they may not be so sure about what the verdict of the tribunal will be. He said that if the tribunal says that there should be a rerun of the presidential election, then giving people palliative of N8,000 monthly will be good for election campaign.
