Tribunal strikes out suit seeking disqualification of Shettima

The Presidential Election Petition Tribunal has rejected a lawsuit filed by the Allied Peoples Movement (APM), which aimed to disqualify Vice President Kashim Shettima.

According to Daily Post, APM had asserted that Kashim Shettima’s nomination as the vice-presidential candidate by the All Progressives Congress (APC) was improper, claiming that he was still the APC candidate for Borno Central Senatorial District when he accepted the VP nomination on July 14.

However, in the court’s ruling on Wednesday, Justice Haruna Tsanani of the PEPT declared that APM’s case, concerning alleged multiple nominations of VP Shettima, falls under pre-election matters, and thus, the tribunal lacked jurisdiction to address it. The court further stated that APM did not have the standing to bring forward matters related to Shettima’s nomination and sponsorship, and it viewed the case as an abuse of the court process.
