Senate withholds El-Rufai's confirmation as minister over security clearance

On Monday, the Nigerian Senate encountered a setback in the confirmation process of Malam Nasir EL- Rufai, the former governor of Kaduna State.

Out of the 48 individuals nominated for ministerial positions by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, a total of 45 have successfully undergone the confirmation process.

According to TheCable, following the approval of these 45 nominees, Godswill Obot Akpabio, the Senate President, disclosed that Nasir El- Rufai and two additional nominees have not received security clearance.

Akpabio remarked, ” Security checks have not granted clearance to El- Rufai and two additional individuals.

” The individuals awaiting confirmation include Malam Nasir El- Rufai (Kaduna), Stella Okotete (Delta), and Danladi Umar (Taraba). “

This development comes more than a week after Tinubu presented a ministerial list comprising 28 individuals to the upper house. The submission was made on July 27.

In the previous week’ s Monday, the Senate screened the former governor of Rivers State, Nyesom Wike; Bello Muhammad of Sokoto State; Nkiruka Onyejeocha from Abia State; Abubakar Kyari, representing Borno State; Sani Abubakar Danladi, a representative from Taraba State; and Badaru Abubakar, hailing from Jigawa State.

Additional nominees encompass Joseph Utsev, designated for Benue State; Betta Edu, nominated for Cross River State; Uju Kennedy Ohaneye, chosen from Anambra State; Olubunmi Tunji Ojo, representing Ondo State; John Enoh, a nominee from Cross River State; Abubakar Momoh, selected from Edo State; Iman Suleiman Ibrahim, selected to represent Nasarawa State; and Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, chosen from Bauchi State.

Nasir El- Rufai (Kaduna) and Dave Umahi (Ebonyi) were subjected to screening by the Senate on Tuesday. Also, Wale Edun, Uche Nnaji, Stella Okotete, Adebayo Adelabu, Ekperikpe Ekpo, Hannatu Musawa, and Musa Dangiwa underwent the screening.

Progressing to the following day, Dele Alake, Lateef Fagbemi, Muhammad Idris, Ali Pate, and Doris Uzoka were evaluated by the red chamber.
