Senate Confirms 45 of 48 Ministerial Nominees

The Senate has completed screening 45 of President Bola Tinubu’s 48 nominations for ministerial positions. The Senate confirmed 45 of the nominations as cabinet members during its session on Monday, August 7. Three of the nominees, former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai, Stella Okotete (Delta State), and Abubakar Danladi (Taraba State), are still undergoing security clearance. The nominations were put to a series of voice votes by Senate President Godswill Akpabio.

Those affected are the former governor of Kaduna State, Nasir El-Rufai, a former senator from Taraba, Sani Danladi, and a nominee from Delta State, Stella Okotete.

The Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, announced the confirmation of the nominees after they were cleared by a voice vote by the senators at the plenary. The senators had cleared the nominees by voice vote at the Committee of the Whole when Mr Akpabio read out their names one after the other. The screening continued at Senate on Saturday with Lola Ade-John, Bosun Tijani, Isiak Salako, Tahir Mamman, and Maigari Ahmadu.

The exercise concluded today with the screening of Mahmoud and then Keyamo. In his remarks, President of the Senate Godswill Akpabio thanked the lawmakers for their doggedness throughout the exercise. He said that the Senate had so far confirmed 45 ministerial nominees out of the 48 sent by the President.

Attempts by some senators to subject him to further scrutiny was deflected by the Senate President as Keyamo’s apology was accepted and he was allowed to take leave of the senate. At the end, Senate confirmed the appointment of all 48 ministerial nominees – including Dr. Bosun Tijjani from Ogun state who also had a difficult time over his unpleasant tweets about Nigerian lawmakers.
