A few hours ago, responses started to follow a social media post made by the presidential candidate for the Labour Party, Peter Gregory Obi, in which he wished General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida, a former military head of state, a happy 82nd birthday.
Obi congratulated the retired army general and referred to him as a “Elder Statesman” in a series of tweets published on his verified Twitter account on August 17.
The former governor of Anambra went on to say that Babangida had a significant influence on the socio-political and economic development of Nigeria by seeing to it that the private sector was reinforced during his time as military Head of State.
Going back in time, Obi recalled that thanks to Babangida’s practical initiatives, Nigeria’s economy was not only reformed and redirected but also prospered while he was in charge.
The Labour Party’s presidential candidate concluded by asking God to extend the Elder Statesman’s years of health and vigour.

Obi’s letter to IBB has sparked a flurry of internet responses, as was to be anticipated, and a variety of Nigerians have joined him to congratulate the former military Head of State.
