Obi's Aide Oseloka H. Obaze Reacts to BAT Suspending Ultimatum and Sending Delegates to Niger for Peace Talks

One of the aides of the Labour Party presidential aspirant, Peter Obi, Oseloka H. Obaze, has reacted after President Bola Ahmed Tinubu reversed his statement threatening military intervention in Niger.

It would be recalled that during an ECOWAS meeting earlier this week, President Tinubu had issued a seven-day ultimatum to the military junta in Niger, threatening military action.

However, on Thursday, in a statement by his special adviser on media Ajuri Ngelale, the president withdrew the seven-day ultimatum and selected delegates for peace talks in Niger instead.

Reacting to this development, Obaze said President Tinubu’s decision to pursue dialogue over military intervention demonstrated that wise counsel had prevailed over bluster.

Obaze noted that if the president had gone ahead with military action, it would have presented a protracted and problematic conflict for Nigeria, akin to the Vietnam War for the United States.

In Obaze’s view, President Tinubu’s reversal showed maturity in reassessing the potential costs of military engagement in Niger after his initial harsh rhetoric. By electing for discussion rather than confrontation, the president made the right choice to avoid ensnaring Nigeria in a messy regional conflict.

Obaze expressed hope that the peace delegation would achieve constructive outcomes in resolving the political crisis in Niger through mediation rather than coercion. He praised President Tinubu’s willingness to walk back his bellicose threats once cooler heads prevailed.
