The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC has claimed that the presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the last general elections, Peter Obi failed to show that he scored majority votes in the election.

The presidential candidates of the Labour Party, Peter Obi and that of the Peoples Democratic Party, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar are currently challenging the victory of Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the Presidential Election Tribunal in Abuja. The presidential election Tribunal commenced sitting few weeks ago to hear the cases by the parties.

According to Premium Times paper, “The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has argued that Labour Party’s presidential candidate, Peter Obi, failed to show how he scored the majority of lawful votes during the 25 February presidential election.”

In its final written address, the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, through its lead lawyer, Abubakar Mahmoud, said Mr Peter Obi’s petition “lacks merits.

Mr Mahmoud added in the INEC’s final address that “Mr Obi failed to “lead credible evidence” to aid his case.”

He stated further that “there was no “mandatory obligation prescribed by the Electoral Act” for INEC “to electronically transmit and collate results of the election…or to fully upload same on IReV before collation of results”
