25% in FCT: Don’t Cancel Our Victory – Tinubu & Shettima Tell Tribunal

According to Daily Post, President Bola Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima have made an impassioned plea to the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal, urging them to refrain from nullifying the February 25 presidential election in Nigeria. The President and Vice President expressed their concerns regarding the controversy surrounding the allocation of 25% of the votes in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

Additionally, they called upon the court to dismiss the petition filed by the Labour Party (LP) and its presidential candidate, Peter Obi. Their lead counsel, Wole Olanipekun, conveyed this appeal in the final address, categorizing the arguments and testimonies presented by the challengers as unfounded, exaggerated, and based on hearsay.

Olanipekun emphasized that the petition lacked merit and substance, urging the court to reject it. He highlighted that the petitioners’ argument claiming that Tinubu and Shettima’s election should be invalidated due to not obtaining 25% of the votes in the FCT was unsupported by legal evidence. According to Olanipekun, the use of the conjunction “and” in the constitution should be interpreted as a connector, not a separator.
