The PUNCH reports that some army officers Wednesday toppled the democratic government of President Ali Bongo, who has been in power since 2009. Bongo was announced the winner of the presidential election in the West African country on Saturday, having fulfilled a two-thirds victory at the polls. Fani-Kayode in a post on his X page said he was not surprised about the coup.

He wrote, “BREAKING NEWS: Sadly another coup has taken place in Africa. “This time it is in the nation of Gabon where President Ali Bongo (pictured below), who together with his late father Alhaji Bongo, had been in power for the last 53 years has been toppled and removed from office. “It appears that the warning I gave in my last essay, titled, ‘Does Killing Nigerien Babies Bring Glory To Our Name?’, was prophetic.

Ganduje, Kwankwaso trade words over ‘failed’ push for ministerial position

Presidential candidate of New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), Rabiu Kwankwaso, and National Chairman of All Progressives Congress (APC), Abdullahi Ganduje, are in a war of words over the failure of President Bola Tinubu to appoint the former as minister.

Ganduje alleged that Kwankwaso lobbied to be appointed Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) in Tinubu’s cabinet. But the spokesperson for the NNPP Presidential Campaign Council, Ladipo Johnson, returned the salvo, saying Ganduje was merely seeking relevance. The new APC boss, in a viral video, said Kwankwaso supported the demolition of buildings in Kano to portray himself as a minister, who would revive the Abuja masterplan.

The video was streaming Ganduje’s meeting with some of his loyalists and party supporters from Kano at the APC secretariat in Abuja. Ganduje stated that his predecessor was desperate to become FCT Minister, but was denied the position by Tinubu. He added that the demolition of buildings approved by his administration was the only way Kwankwaso and Governor Abba Yusuf could express their frustration under the guise of sanitizing Kano’s masterplan.

Insecurity: Niger proposes amnesty to bandits

Governor Umar Bago of Niger State has said his administration is discussing with bandits to find an amicable resolution to the issue of insecurity in the state.

Fielding questions from journalists, yesterday, when he visited the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Malagi, in Abuja, the governor said his administration was offering the bandits amnesty to drop their arms. He said: “We are discussing with them to see how we can solve the problem amicably. However, we are battle-ready. We are discussing with them, not negotiating; talking to them to come out, drop their arms, and be integrated into society. It is a clarion call.

“Government is working and some of these things are not for public consumption; some of the things the security agencies are doing are not what we will come out and talk about before the cameras. I can tell you that the President is deeply concerned and is working round the clock to ensure that peace returns to Nigeria, and he will leave no stone unturned in ensuring that it happens.”
