Presidential Election Tribunal Dismisses 25% FCT Vote Requirement

As Nigerians from all walks of life are eagerly watching the televised live proceedings from the Tribunal venue at the Court of Appeal in Abuja, the nation’s capital, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has gained first victory over one of the petitions filed against him by Labour Party’s Mr. Peter Obi.

According to a post by Channels TV on X (formerly Twitter), the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal in Abuja has rejected the petition claiming that presidential candidates must secure 25% of the votes in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) to be declared winners of the election.

The Chairman of the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal, Justice Haruna Simon Tsammani, said today that there is no special status attached to the FCT and that it is equal to every other state in Nigeria.

This decision was made following a petition submitted by the Labour Party and its presidential candidate, Peter Obi. They contested President Bola Tinubu’s election, asserting that Tinubu should be ineligible for the presidency due to his failure to secure 25% of the votes in the FCT.

Recall, the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal is currently delivering its judgment on the election petition filed by Peter Obi of the Labour Party, the Allied Peoples Movement (APM) and Atiku Abubakar of the PDP against Bola Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
