President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has to be aware that a bag of corn now costs 60,000 naira, according to Prof. Usman Yusuf, former ex-secretary of the National Health Insurance Scheme.
In an interview with PUNCH newspaper journalist Daniel Ayantoye, Prof. Usman Yusuf made the remark in response to a question on what could be done to mitigate the effects of fuel subsidies given that Nigerians are already suffering.
Prof. Usman responded that the government had not planned anything and that Tinubu had simply made the announcement on the day of his inauguration without considering the implications for Nigerians. He claimed that a lot of individuals in Nigeria are going through hard times and are suffering.
He did, however, say that President Tinubu and his staff must start over. He claimed that Tinubu’s spokesperson had stated that there wouldn’t be another increase in the price of petrol, which he claimed meant they would return to subsidies. That’s confusion, he claimed. He claimed that many Nigerians have it tough.
He said, “The president(Tinubu) needs to know that a bag of maize is now 60,000. Some people in Abuja spend 70 percent of their earnings on transportation. He said there is inflation everywhere, food prices have increased, grains fertilizers etc.”
