Subsidy Removal: President Tinubu Gives New Directive On N8,000 Palliative

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Tuesday ordered the immediate review of the proposed N8000, the conditional cash transfer to Nigerians, meant to cushion the effect of the petrol subsidy removal.

According to TheCable reports, the spokesperson to the president, Dele Alake, declared that Tinubu ordered that the whole package of the palliative by the government should be unveiled to the people of Nigeria.

The statement partly reads: “The N8,000 conditional cash transfer programme envisaged to bring succour to most vulnerable households be reviewed immediately. This is in deference to the views expressed by Nigerians against it.”

Dele Alake added that the cash programme was not the only item in the relief package initiated by the president.

President Tinubu, according to Alake, vowed to always put Nigerians at the heart of his policy and programme.

The development is barely two months after President Bola Tinubu announced the removal of the fuel subsidy on May 29.

Following the announcement, the cost of fuel and other basic commodities has doubled and the federal government is yet to roll out its palliatives

On Thursday, July 13, the National Assembly approved the president’s request to distribute N500bn palliatives to 12 million poor and low-income families in Nigeria.

The national assembly also approved the president’s move to acquire an $800 million loan facility from the World Bank, which the Senate signed.
