Mr Osita Okechukwu, the Director-General of the Voice of Nigeria (VON) says he fully understands the grief of the opposition parties over the judgement of the Presidential Election Petition Court (PEPC).

Okechukwu, also a foundation member of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) said this when he spoke with journalists in Abuja.

He said that although the main opposition PDP had bright chances of bouncing back through the 2023 presidential election, the political greed of the party’s candidate, former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar, denied the party victory.

Okechukwu said that Atiku’s failure to rise to the golden opportunity and play as a statesman by throwing support for his erstwhile running mate Peter Obi or any other Southern presidential candidate divided the opposition party.

“Atiku dealt PDP a huge blow from which it might be difficult to recover.”

He dismissed claims that the petitioners had maintained that President Bola Tinubu was not qualified to run and allegations of irregularities in the conduct of the election as well as the failure to electronically transmit results in real time were fatal to the respondents’ case.

According to Vanguard news, Former President Muhammadu Buhari has expressed joy over the ruling of the Presidential Elections Petition Court (PEPC) confirming the victory of the All Progressives Congress (APC), its candidate, President Bola Tinubu and his running mate, Vice President Kashim Shettima in the February 25 election.

In his reaction after the judgment, he said the PEPC has “written history” by spurning intimidation and all manner of prejudice to deliver justice according to law to a majority of citizens whose wish is that the choices they made are respected.

A statement issued by his spokesman, Garba Shehu, quoted him as saying: “If anybody has won today it is the democracy and the people,” adding “with the verdict of the Supreme Court, the election period is over and it is time to put the heat and dust behind us.”

He advised that the new APC administration led by Tinubu should get the support of everyone in order to deliver the promises it made to the people.

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar on Thursday rejected the Presidential Election Petitions Tribunal judgement that affirmed the victory of President Bola Tinubu in the February 25, 2023, presidential election.

He said the tribunal judgement failed to restore confidence.

“Though the judgement of yesterday is respected, it is a judgement I refused to accept. I refused to accept the judgement because I believe it is bereft of substantial justice,” Atiku said while addressing a world press conference at the PDP headquarters in Abuja.

The PUNCH reports the tribunal threw out the case of Atiku, who is the Peoples Democratic Party presidential candidate, and his Labour Party counterpart, Peter Obi, and upheld the victory of Tinubu.

Both Atiku and Obi rejected Wednesday’s judgment of the tribunal affirming the election of Tinubu. The Legal Adviser to the Labour Party, Kehinde Edun, vowed to challenge the judgment at the Supreme Court.

Also, Atiku’s Lead Counsel, Chris Uche, SAN, said he had received instructions from his client to file an appeal at the Supreme Court.

He said “The judgment has been delivered but we have not received justice. Luckily, the law has given us leverage to go on appeal to the Supreme Court. We have instructions from our clients to go to the Supreme Court. The struggle continues.”

Governor Bello said the triumph at the tribunal “stands a testament to the resilience of Nigeria’s democratic institutions and reaffirms that our courts remain the hope of the common man.”

A statement signed by the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Onogwu Muhammed, released on Wednesday, quoted him as saying that the judgment delivered by the tribunal was a significant milestone, as it upheld the will of the people, as clearly demonstrated during the elections held on 25 February 2023.

“It underscores the importance of fair and transparent electoral processes in our great nation.

“In the light of this outcome, Governor Bello believes that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, a true democrat and father of the nation, will demonstrate his act of magnanimity and extend hands of unity to those who may not have been favoured by the court’s decision,” the statement said.
