Peter Obi Vows to Appeal Ruling on Presidential Election, Warns Against Erosion of Electoral Justice

Candidate of the Labour Party, Mr. Peter Obi, has vowed to challenge the judgment of the Presidential Election Petition Court (PEPC), which upheld the election of President Bola Tinubu.

Obi, whose petition was dismissed by the court, expressed concerns that if not addressed, it could lead to the erosion of sound electoral jurisprudence in the country. He emphasized that dissatisfied litigants, struggling to establish their case due to obstacles from government institutions like the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), might resort to unlawful means for justice.

Speaking through his legal team, led by Dr. Livy Uzoukwu, SAN, Obi stated, “Our electoral jurisprudence is at risk of disappearing if we don’t act cautiously. I say this sincerely because when election contestants consistently face obstacles in proving their cases, starting with INEC, they may consider alternative, possibly unlawful, avenues for justice.”

Vanguard reported that Obi also commended the Court of Appeal for introducing live streaming during the judgment. He noted that they had previously requested live streaming for all proceedings but were denied. However, the court’s decision to stream the judgment contributed to transparency.

He added, “It would have been better if the entire proceedings were streamed, allowing the public to watch and engage with the judgment. I hope and pray that this approach continues from the beginning of future cases.”
