PEPT: Tribunal strikes out APC's suit against Peter Obi LP membership

The Presidential Election Petition Tribunal has made a significant ruling by striking out a petition filed by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima. Their petition had challenged the eligibility of Peter Obi’s candidacy under the Labour Party, as reported by ARISE NEWS.

It is worth noting that Peter Obi had formerly been a member of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) before switching to the Labour Party in preparation for the February 25th presidential election.

During the tribunal proceedings at the Appeal Court in Abuja, it was firmly asserted that Tinubu and Shettima had no authority to challenge Obi’s candidacy. Justice Abba Mohammed, presiding over the case, emphasized that the matter of party membership is an internal affair for the respective political parties.

Furthermore, the tribunal dismissed the respondents’ objection, which contended that Obi and the Labour Party had failed to include Atiku Abubakar as a respondent in their petition.

In another noteworthy development, the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal (PEPT) has ruled that the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) does not possess any special privileges compared to other states. Justice Haruna Tsammani, presiding over this matter, delivered a crucial judgment on the substantive petition filed by Obi and the Labour Party, which challenged President Tinubu’s election.

In his petition, Obi argued that Tinubu should be disqualified from the presidency because he failed to secure 25% of the votes cast in the FCT.

However, Justice Tsammani, in a ruling issued on Wednesday, firmly stated that the FCT does not hold a superior status compared to other states in the country.
