PEPT: 'I Saw A Judge Who Was Saying That A Serious Opposition Does Not Need INEC' – Sani Umar

A Former Spokesperson of the PDP Presidential Campaign Council, Sani Umar has faulted some of the comments being made by the Presidential Election Tribunal Judges on the bench during the PEPT judgment. He claimed that one of the judges said in it comment that a serious opposition does not need INEC, a comment which he inferred to be political and shows no hint of impartiality from the judge. He went further to refute the claims of one of the Judges that the opposition wanted to use social media to intimidate the judiciary, he clarified that the social media platform is to reassess what the judges are likely to do as regarding the petition.

He said, ”I saw a judge who went further to begin to analyze. A judge is supposed to be impartial but a judge was analyzing to say Obi won this, Obi won that. Why should he complain? That is not impartiality, that is trying to justify why you are taking a position in the matter. Then I saw a judge who was saying that a serious opposition does not need INEC. So if we don’t need INEC, who do we need in the election? We don’t even need the Court, it is INEC that we need. If INEC had done their work very well, we don’t need to go to the Court.

So for her to say that we are using the Social media to intimidate them, we are not using Social media. Social media is a congregation of Nigerians. Nigerians from all forms of life congregate to share ideas in order to move the nation forward. And in that, we have to examine and reassess what the justices are likely to do and what we anticipate from the justice.”
