PDP gave the south opportunity to produce president for 13yrs & the north never complained- Momodu

Prominent Nigerian journalist and member of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Dele Momodu, has addressed the claim made by Nyesom Wike regarding an alleged agreement within the PDP to rotate the presidency between the North and South. Momodu refuted the existence of such an agreement and emphasized the PDP’s fairness in presidential power-sharing.

During an interview on Channels Television, Dele Momodu stated that there was no formal agreement within the PDP to allocate the presidency to the South. He argued that the PDP had already been equitable in its distribution of presidential terms, with southern leaders serving a substantial portion of the time.

Momodu pointed out that the PDP had held the presidency for 13 out of a possible 24 years, with leaders from the South occupying the position for 13 years. He cited President Obasanjo’s eight-year tenure and President Goodluck Jonathan’s five-year term as examples. He also noted that if Jonathan had won the 2015 election, it would have extended southern presidency to 17 years out of 24, and the North did not raise any complaints during this time.

“If PDP gave us in the South an opportunity to have 17 years, out of which we got 13, so how can one man come out and say that it is the law to give the presidency to the South now? The reason he is saying that is because he knows that from the South, there will be nobody to challenge him for the ticket.”

Dele Momodu suggested that Nyesom Wike’s push for a southern presidency within the PDP may be influenced by his desire to secure the party’s ticket uncontested. Momodu implied that Wike believed there would be no strong challengers from the South in the party’s primary elections. Momodu defended the PDP’s record of presidential power-sharing, emphasizing that there was no pre-existing agreement to allocate the presidency to the South and that the party had already provided significant opportunities for leaders from the southern region to hold the office.
