PDP Braces for New Crisis Over Tinubu's Cabinet

According to the Nation paper, some leaders of the opposition party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) are reportedly advocating for the prompt removal of any of its top members who agree to join President Tinubu’s upcoming cabinet.

This development hints at a potential new crisis brewing within the PDP.

There are clear signs that factions within the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) are gearing up for another intense clash over President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s purported intention to appoint certain influential figures from the embattled party as ministers and possibly offer them other positions in his government.

According to a reliable insider, factions within the party are bracing themselves for a fierce battle over the scheme to advocate for the removal of PDP leaders who consent to join the Tinubu administration.

Additionally, reports suggest that followers of Atiku Abubakar, the party’s presidential candidate for the 2023 elections, and supporters of former Governor Nyesom Wike from Rivers State are poised to clash openly in a bid to seize control of the party.

The turmoil within the PDP can be traced back to the aftermath of the party’s presidential primary election. It was during this event that Wike, the former vice president, lost to Atiku.

However, Atiku’s choice for a running mate, the ex-governor of Delta State, Ifeanyi Okowa, went against the recommendation of a committee led by Samuel Ortom. This committee had purportedly suggested Wike as the PDP’s vice presidential candidate.

Consequently, Wike did not lend his support to Atiku during the general elections and instead rallied behind Tinubu, who emerged as the victorious candidate.

The crisis engulfed the National Chairman, Dr. Iyorchia Ayu when a Benue High Court instructed him to refrain from assuming the role of the PDP’s national chairman until a verdict was reached on the pending lawsuit.

In compliance with the court order, the National Working Committee (NWC) of the PDP appointed Amb. Umar Illiya Damagum, the Deputy National Chairman (North), as the interim national chairman following Ayu’s voluntary suspension.

Indications of imminent turmoil within the party surfaced when Phrank Shaibu, Atiku’s Special Assistant on Public Communication, addressed the demands made by former Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose.

In response to Fayose’s plea for Wike to be included in Tinubu’s list of ministerial nominees, Shaibu remarked that the G-5 governors were merely pursuing significance, appointments, and immunity from legal actions.
