It's Illogical To Score 25% In 30 States And Not Be Made The President Because Of 25% In FCT -Lemmy Ughegbe

The issue of the 25 percent votes in the FCT has been a topic of debate since Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu was declared the winner of the February 25th election. The opposition parties’ candidates who participated in the election have requested the Presidential Election Petition Court to overturn Tinubu’s victory on the grounds that he did not score 25 percent in the federal capital territory.

Addressing this matter, Nigerian journalist and political analyst, Lemmy Ughegbe, expressed his opinion that it does not make sense for the overall winner of the election to be denied the presidency solely because of not achieving 25 percent in the FCT.

During a newspaper review on AIT, Ughegbe stated that even though he did not support Tinubu during the election, he disagrees with the notion that 25 percent in the FCT is compulsory.

He said, “We hope that the judges, after carefully considering all the arguments, will be able to decide and interpret the law. Remember, the law should not cause confusion. Personally, despite the fact that Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu was not my preferred candidate at that time, I still believe that no law should be designed to be illogical. If a candidate has won the election by getting 25 percent in 30 states, it is illogical to say that they cannot become the President simply because they did not achieve 25 percent in the FCT.”
