Stop Wike, Oyetola, Umahi, others’ life pensions, SERAP tells Tinubu

According to The Punch, the Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project, or SERAP, has urged President Bola Tinubu to make sure that the states stop paying former governors who are ministers in his administration life pensions and other benefits while they hold their ministerial positions.

In addition, SERAP urged the President to direct the former governors to return to the public treasury any pensions and other benefits they may have received since leaving office.

Badaru Abubakar, Nyesom Wike, Bello Matawalle, Adegboyega Oyetola, David Umahi, Simon Lalong, Atiku Bagudu, and Ibrahim Geidam are among the impacted former governors who are currently serving as ministers in the Tinubu administration.

The organization claimed in a letter to President Tinubu, dated August 19, 2023, and signed by Kolawole Oluwadare, Deputy Director of SERAP, that “the appointment of former governors who collect life pensions while serving as ministers is implicitly forbidden by the Nigerian Constitution 1999 as amended and the country’s international legal obligations.”
