Not Winning 25% In FCT Does Not Qualify For The Cancelation Of the Election -Lemmy Ughegbe

While Nigerians wait for the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal in Abuja to rule on the petitions filed by Mr. Peter Obi of the Labour Party and Atiku Abubakar contesting the declaration of Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu as the winner of the February 25 election, political analyst Lemmy Ughegbe has stated that the election will not be cancelled on the basis of 25% of the votes cast in the Federal Capital Territory.

Recall that one of the petitions the opposition parties are submitting to the tribunal to have the results of the 2023 presidential election overturned is that they did not receive 25% of the vote in the federal capital territory.

Lemmy Ughegbe stated during the paper Review on AIT that he believes the judges will render the appropriate decisions.

He maintains that the constitution is clear and doesn’t believe it is sufficient justification for the election to be declared invalid due to FCT.

Hear him. “What were the authors of the constitution’s intentions and what were they thinking as they created the law? Is it correct to say that even though a man has won everywhere, he would be disqualified if he only wins in 30 States and fails to win 25 percent in the FCT. In my well-reasoned opinion, the law will be interpreted very broadly because it was not intended to cause ambiguity. I don’t believe that the failure to receive 25% of the vote in the federal capital territory qualifies for a cancellation under the provisions of the law.
