'No Election Have Attracted Such Level Of Blackmail & Intimidation Of The Judiciary' -Femi Falana

Femi Falana, a Nigerian human rights lawyer, expressed concern about the level of blackmail and intimidation targeting the judiciary in relation to the presidential election petition tribunal. Falana made these remarks during an interview in a video (27:22) on Channels TV’s Politics Today program, where Seun Okinbaloye asked for his views on the developments surrounding the tribunal case and the pressure on the judiciary, including various issues that have been raised.

Falana responded by saying, “We have witnessed election petitions since the colonial era, but no election has witnessed such an extreme level of blackmail and intimidation of the judiciary. Just last Friday in Abuja, where I addressed the Nigerian Labour Union, some unscrupulous individuals obtained a copy of the video recording and manipulated it in a criminal manner, suggesting that if the judiciary fails Nigerians, there should be a coup, as if I made such a statement…”

He highlighted that this level of intimidation is concerning. Furthermore, he emphasized his worry that people are giving the impression that everything hinges on the judgment of the Tribunal.

Falana pointed out that any party that loses on Wednesday still has the opportunity to appeal to the Supreme Court, so there is no basis for the unwarranted blackmail and pressure currently observed.
