Nigerien Junta Lacks Authority to Expel French Ambassador, Says France

France has responded to the Niger junta’s decision to expel its ambassador, Sylvain Itte, stating that the military rulers in Niger lack the authority to take such action. The junta had given the French ambassador 48 hours to leave the country after he refused an invitation to meet with the junta-appointed foreign minister.

According to PUNCH paper, France’s Foreign Ministry expressed that the actions of the Nigerien government were against the interests of Niger. However, France firmly stated that the “putschists,” referring to the junta members who seized power, do not have the authority to make such a request. They emphasized that the ambassador’s approval comes solely from the legitimate elected authorities in Niger.

Paris added that they constantly evaluate the security and operational conditions of their embassy. The French President, Emmanuel Macron, also demanded the release of Nigerien President Mohamed Bazoum, who was detained in a military coup led by the former commander of Niger’s presidential guard on July 26, 2023. Macron has further called for a restoration of democratic order in Niger, which experienced a military coup toppling its elected leadership.

The situation highlights the diplomatic tensions between the junta-led Niger and France, the former colonial power. The response from France underscores their commitment to the legitimacy of diplomatic procedures and elected authorities in the country.
