Niger: ECOWAS Consensus Is That We Won't Allow Anyone To Insincerely Buy Time – Tinubu To US Envoy

Amid the ongoing faceoff between the Economic Community Of West African States (ECOWAS) and the military junta that has seized power in the Niger Republic, President Bola Tinubu has assured the United States Presidential Envoy and Assistant Secretary for African Affairs, Ambassador Molly Phee, that African leaders won’t permit anyone to buy time in the bid to return Niger Republic back to constitutional order.

According to a report posted by Channels TV on its verified Twitter handle, Tinubu made this statement during a meeting with the US Envoy on Saturday, August 26.

In a State House Press Release sighted by the media outlet, President Tinubu was quoted as saying that though war was not beneficial to both his economic reforms and that of the West African region, the defense of democracy is a must.

He went on to reveal that as Chairman of ECOWAS, he has been holding the organization back from using the options available at its disposal until other diplomatic channels have been fully explored.

He said; “We are deep in our attempts to peacefully settle the issue in Niger by leveraging diplomatic tools. I continue to hold ECOWAS back, despite readiness for all options, in order to exhaust all other remedial mechanisms.

War is not ideal for my economic reforms, nor for the region, but the defense of democracy is sacrosanct. The ECOWAS consensus is that we will not allow anyone to insincerely buy time.”
