Niger Coup: Nigerien Protesters Attempted To Attack Embassy – Nigerian Ambassador

According to the Premium Times, an official of the Nigerian embassy announced that Nigerien protesters attempted to attack the embassy in Niamey but were foiled by the Nigerien military.

On July 30, a terrorist effort was made four days after President Mohamed Bazoum’s democratically elected administration was overthrown by presidential guards. President Bazoum and his family have since been held in custody.

In an announcement released on Friday and signed by embassy employee Liti Auwalu, Nigeria’s ambassador to Niger, Mohamed Usman, made this assertion in response to footage that went viral on the internet showing a burning structure that many people mistakenly identified as the Nigerian embassy.

The press release reiterated that the footage is fraudulent and should not be believed and added, “At this time, the Embassy is well protected by the Nigerien Military and other Security Agencies.”

Regardless of the coup that took place in Niger and the robust reaction from ECOWAS, Nigeria has been running its embassy there.

On Wednesday, July 26, Mr. Bazoum was detained by presidential guards under the command of General Abdourahamane Tchiani, who also disbanded the government and took over as president.

To convince Niger to reinstall Mr. Bazoum, ECOWAS retaliated by imposing penalties on the country. Additionally, it gave a seven-day deadline to the putschists, which they disregarded.

Last Thursday, the bloc conducted another meeting and decided to activate and send out its standby force to Niger as a means to reinstate the country’s constitutional structure.
