Niger Coup Leaders Form New Government

According to a declaration read out on national television on Thursday, the military leaders in Niger who took power in a coup last month have constituted a new government. The coup plotters in Niger have appointed an economist as the country’s new prime minister.

Prime Minister Ali Mahaman Lamine Zeine will lead the 21-member administration, with defence and interior ministries headed by generals from the new military governing council. Meanwhile, On Wednesday, President Bola Tinubu continued a series of consultations and meetings at the Presidential Villa in Abuja to address the political problem in Niger Republic, where a coup d’etat happened recently.

The Economic Community of West African States’ Authority of Heads of State and Government, chaired by Tinubu, has interfered by imposing a series of sanctions and an ultimatum, threatening armed retaliation. However, Tinubu, as Chairman of ECOWAS’ Authority of Heads of State and Government, met with leaders of several Islamic sects in the country on Wednesday evening, seeking his assent to intercede and negotiate with their counterparts in Niger Republic.
