After 50 days in office, President Bola Tinubu has sent the list of his ministerial nominees to the Senate, and to be read out today by the President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio.

The Guardian gathered that the Clerk of the National Assembly, Magaji Tambuwal, received the letter containing the list yesterday.

As mandated by law, the President is obligated to submit the list of ministerial nominees within 60 days of assuming office. After Tinubu’s inauguration on May 29, he has until July 26 to fulfill this requirement.

According to insider sources at the Presidency, the ministerial list had been prepared well in advance, but recent adjustments have been made to ensure its utmost effectiveness.

“The list of ministerial nominees has been ready since, but the President had to make some changes in some states,” a reliable source disclosed.

Nigerians have been eagerly awaiting the unveiling of the ministerial list, leading to the circulation of various speculative lists in recent weeks. Nonetheless, President Tinubu has skillfully guarded his choices, leaving the public in suspense as to who will ultimately secure portfolios in the final list of cabinet members.

The resignation of the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Senator Adamu Abdullahi, marked the end of a controversial era in the ruling party which has produced no fewer than four chairmen since its formation in 2013.

Former governor of Osun State, Chief Bisi Akande, was the founding chairman followed by Chief John Odigie Oyegun; Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, and Governor Mai Mala Buni of Yobe State who was caretaker chairman before Adamu’s emergence.

Daily Trust reports that all the chairmen were ousted unceremoniously, and like the historical banana peel, Adamu also left his seat unceremoniously after a series of controversies.

Here is a list of controversies which defined the tenure of Adamu who was elected on March 26, 2022 at the party’s national convention in Abuja spending less than one and half years.

The Chidi Ibeh faction of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, yesterday, outlined how President Bola Tinubu can stop sit-at-home orders forced on southeast residents by pro-Biafra agitators.

In a statement in Abakaliki, signed by Secretary General, Mazi Okechukwu Isiguzoro, the socio-cultural group said after its general assembly with representatives from seven Igbo-speaking states, including Rivers and Delta, it came out with suggestions on how the President can address the issue and curb violent agitations in the region.

It said: “President Tinubu should work with southeast governors and other relevant officials to address perceived marginalisation and injustice against Igbo people. This could involve implementing Federal Government’s policies and programmes that promote inclusivity, equitable resource allocation and socio-economic development in the region.

“The Federal Government, in collaboration with southeast governors, can launch specific initiatives aimed at boosting infrastructure development, like building of dams, establishment of deep sea port at Akwaete Blue River in Abia, inter-state standard gauge railway lines, job creation, and overseas training of repented Biafra agitators.”

The faction added: “Tinubu should ensure security agencies operate with utmost professionalism and respect for human rights in dealing with civil disobedience and violent agitation. It is crucial to strike a balance between maintaining law and order, while avoiding excessive use of force, which could further escalate tension.

“Federal Government, in collaboration with Ohanaeze Ndigbo, southeast governors, and other stakeholders, should promote reconciliation efforts aimed at healing wounds and divisions caused by the conflict.

Nigerian politics and the ‘PHD’ syndrome

How are the mighty fallen is a phrase from the Holy Bible in 2 Samuel 1: 19. Over the weekend, a political tsunami swept away the National Chairman of the ruling All Progressives Congress, Senator Abdullahi Adamu and the National Secretary of the party, Senator Iyiola Omisore. They were forced to resign their respective positions to avoid the ignominious option of being sacked by their colleagues in the National Executive Committee. This brought to an end a tortuous journey of 15 months having been elected at a National Convention in Abuja on March 26, 2022.

Several allegations were levelled against the duo. According to the Daily Trust online edition of Monday, July 17, 2023, Adamu committed seven mortal sins. These include opposition to the emergence of Asiwaju Bola Tinubu in the lead up to the presidential party primary last year. The former National Chairman informed the NWC then that former President Muhammadu Buhari was backing ex-President of the Senate, Senator Ahmed Lawan, as the consensus presidential standard bearer of the party. This was later countered by the Progressives Governors’ Forum who went to meet the former president and lobbied him to allow for a power shift to Southern Nigeria. Adamu also was alleged to fail to reconcile the warring factions among the state chapters of the party.

Furthermore, National Vice Chairman of the party for the North-West, Lukman Salihu, many times accused the former national chairman of running the party like a sole administrator as well as abuse of office; the failure of Adamu to win his Polling Unit, ward, local government and the state (Nasarawa) for the APC during the presidential election of February 25 also show him as a weak leader who has not improved the fortunes of the party. There was also the open criticism of the ex-chairman of the emergence of principal officers of the 10th National Assembly. He was likewise accused of a gaffe for saying Governor of Ondo State, Rotimi Akeredolu, is “extremely incapacitated” while praying for his speedy recovery last week. Lastly, Adamu was accused of snubbing his colleagues “Governors of 1999 Set” who went on official visit to see the president last week. He was conspicuously absent when he should ordinarily be the chief host.
