The former Head of State said this when the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, paid courtesy visits to him and another former head of state, General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida, on Sunday. At the home of the two statesmen, the Minister said visits to elders are part of Nigeria’s cultural heritage.

The minister noted that the fatherly role they provided for this country over the years will continue to be appreciated. He also informed them of the resolve of President Tinubu to return Nigeria to its path of glory. Abdulsalami congratulated President Tinubu’s administration for clocking 100 days in office and the Hon. Minister on his appointment.

‘I Don’t Want To Contain China’ – Biden

US President Joe Biden insisted Sunday he does not want to “contain” China, as the two powers face deepening divisions on trade, security, and rights.

Biden said he had met Chinese Premier Li Qiang at the G20 summit in New Delhi — a meeting the White House had not announced — and discussed “stability”. The president revealed the encounter in Hanoi, where earlier in the day he agreed a deal to deepen ties with Vietnam as Washington looks to bolster its network of allies around Asia and the Pacific in the face of Beijing’s rising influence.

Washington and Beijing are at loggerheads on a range of global issues, and Biden accused China of seeking to bend the international order to its will. One of the things that is going on now is China is beginning to change some of the rules of the game, in terms of trade and other issues,” Biden told a news conference.

Ijaw Elders Warn Jonathan, Others On Bayelsa Guber

Stakeholders under the auspices of the Ijaw Elders and Professionals Forum (IEPF) have alleged a move to trick Ijaw leaders across the Niger Delta region into attending a meeting that has a hidden agenda to endorse the second term bid of the Bayelsa State Governor, Senator Douye Diri.

The IEPF in a statement signed by its National Secretary, Samuel Mpigi James, described the ongoing plan to hold the Ijaw elders meeting as a complete endorsement charade and warned former President Goodluck Jonathan and other credible Ijaw leaders to abstain from it.

James said: “We have very credible reports that the Douye Diri-led prosperity administration is attempting to hold what it styles as Ijaw Leaders meeting very soon to, on the surface discuss contemporary issues concerning the Ijaw nation and its future, especially politically. “The Ijaw Elders and Professionals forum believes that such meetings are healthy even if they occur only sporadically.

North-East govs lament growing banditry, worsening security situation in the region

While acknowledging the relative success recorded against insurgency in the North-East subregion, the North-East Governors Forum (NEGF) has lamented that a new dimension of growing banditry is added to worsen the security situation in the subregion.

The NEGF observed that as a result of the concerted efforts of the Military to flush bandits from the other parts of the country, the bandits are now moving towards the Northeast. The Forum stressed that the case is becoming worse in Bauchi, Gombe, and Taraba States, places hitherto without banditry, the Forum therefore called on the Federal Government to urgently intervene to address this issue.

These are contained in a communique issued at the end of the NEGF 8th regular meeting held in Maiduguri, capital of Borno state over the weekend, attended by the Vice President of Nigeria, Kashim Shettima. In the communique signed by the NEGF Chairman, Borno State Governor, Prof Babagana Umara Zulum, the Forum stated that it is aware that some traditional rulers and other local authorities are conniving with the bandits, sheltering them and covering to commit crimes within the subregion.

Niger junta accuses France of deploying troops for possible military intervention

Niger coup leaders have accused France of assembling forces, war materials, and equipment in several neighboring West African countries with a view to “military intervention”.

The junta’s spokesman, Major Amadou Abdramane disclosed this on behalf of the military leaders on Saturday, according to France 24. “France continues to deploy its forces in several ECOWAS (Economic Community of West African States) countries as part of preparations for an aggression against Niger, which it is planning in collaboration with this community organization,” Abdramane said.

In his statement, Abdramane said France had deployed military aircraft, helicopters, and 40 armored vehicles to Cote d’Ivoire and the Benin Republic. “Military cargo aircraft have enabled large quantities of war material and equipment to be unloaded in Senegal, Cote d’Ivoire, and Benin, to name but a few,” he added. France has refused to acknowledge Niger military leaders as a legitimate government since they deposed Mohamed Bazoum on July 26.
