2023 Rivers Guber Polls: APC Closes Case At Rivers State Election Petition Tribunal

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has closed its case before the Rivers State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal in Abuja, DAILY POST reports. The adoption of the final written address has been scheduled for a date to be communicated to the parties. Patrick Tonye-Cole, the governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress, APC, in Rivers State, is contesting the victory of Governor Siminalayi Fubara of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, as declared by the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC.

In April, the PDP protested and stopped all sections of the Port Harcourt-Aba express road heading to the INEC office. They barred the entrance to the Rivers State INEC office for about two weeks to prevent the APC governorship candidate from entering. On March 18, 2023, Tonye-Cole was to collect the Certified True Copy of the election results declaring Governor Fubara the winner.

The PDP stated that their protest was in response to the APC’s purported conspiracy to replace the CTC of the election results with a fake. They also urged that INEC not allow only one political party to review electoral materials, but that all parties inspect them together. The demonstration came only days after operatives of Rivers State Police Command detained some of the lawyers working on Tonye-Cole’s election lawsuit, along with their materials, but later released them.
