Idea of doing business in Nigeria suicidal – Peter Obi

Mr. Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential contender in the most recent general election, bemoaned the government’s failure to encourage business owners to develop in Nigeria.

He also bemoaned the fact that other Asian firms that were listed alongside Nigerian firms in the stock markets are in wealth, while their Nigerian competitors have either shut down their operations or are still struggling to stay afloat.

According to the Vanguard, he made this disclosure during the 40th anniversary of Cutix Company and the Grand Reception hosted by the firm for its co-founder and most recent chairman, Ambassador Obi Nwosu, who retired last Friday.

He pointed out that Nigeria’s issues are a result of having leaders who haven’t generated money or jobs at the forefront of the country’s operations.

“Sadly, doing business in Nigeria is tough, and starting a firm here is the same as committing suicide because everything that supports business would irritate you.

“Other international firms, such as those in some regions of Asia, were also listed when Cutix Plc was initially mentioned in the Nigerian Stock Market, but nowadays those companies thrive in affluence in comparison to those within Nigeria.

“Until the federal government agrees to do the necessary thing by backing these businesses, they will not succeed. They need the government’s help because they are the companies that generate jobs and revive the economy.

Roads were built for companies and Cutix Plc by my administration while I was the governor of Anambra State. The government and Cutix each contributed 50% of the project’s cost, and the remaining 50% was given to the corporation to build the road.

I also remember playing a key role in Chief Odi Nwosu’s selection by former President Goodluck Jonathan as an ambassador to the Republic of Burundi. At this juncture, I must congratulate both him and the founder of the company, Engr. Dr. Ajulu Uzodike, for owning the business for 40 years.
