Garbon: I Wish For Free And Fair Elections – Atiku’s Former Aide Reacts To Gabon Coup

Daniel Bwala, a legal expert and former spokesperson for the Atiku Abubakar presidential campaign during the 2023 presidential election, has voiced his desire for transparent and equitable elections in the African continent. He expressed his concern that if Africa conducted genuinely free and fair elections, the military would not contemplate orchestrating coups to seize control of governments.

Bwala conveyed this sentiment in response to the recent coup in Gabon. It should be recalled that military officials had appeared on national television to announce their takeover of power in Gabon after President Ali Bongo’s re-election for a third term in the Central African nation. As reported by the BBC, the officers stated their intention to invalidate the results of the election held on Saturday, a contest contested by the opposition on grounds of being “fraudulent.”

A group of twelve soldiers declared their dissolution of “all the institutions of the republic.” Taking to Twitter to share his perspective on the situation, Bwala highlighted the Gabon coup as the seventh most recent coup in Africa. He asserted that even the poorest form of civilian governance is superior to military rule.

In his words, “Gabon again? Central Africa? This is the seventh most recent coup in Africa. I genuinely hope that free and fair elections, the epitome of democracy, prevail in Africa, so these individuals do not resort to seizing power. ‘The lowest form of civilian rule is preferable to the best military rule.’ Africa, it is time to rectify our course.”
