Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Mr Nyesom Wike, yesterday, bragged that he is yet to see the party chieftain, who will suspend him from the party.

Speaking in an interview on Channels Television, Wike also said governance is not about membership of a political party.

Asked whether it was right for him to take an appointment in an APC-led government, the former governor of Rivers State said he became the FCT Minister to support President Bola Tinubu’s administration and not as a member of a political party.

When asked if he was afraid that the PDP could suspend him, Wike queried whether there was anyone in the party, who could suspend him.

The National Working Committee (NWC) of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) has refuted the purported suspension of Rabiu Kwankwaso, the 2023 Presidential Candidate of the party.

Ladipo Johnson, the NNPP national auditor, stated this at a news conference on Wednesday at the party’s national headquarters in Abuja.

Mr Johnson, a former spokesperson for the Kwankwanso Presidential Campaign Council, said the suspension was null and void.

A faction of the party headed by a former Board of Trustees (BoT) Chairman, Boniface Aniebonan, had on Tuesday suspended Mr Kwankwaso for six months over alleged anti-party activities after a parallel National Executive Committee (NEC) in Lagos.

It also appointed a former National Publicity Secretary of the party, Major Agbo, as the acting National Chairman.

The Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alletion, Dr Betta Edu, disclosed on Wednesday that 23,000 people have been reported missing in less than a decade due to the insurgency in some parts of the country.

She said that the figure represented half the number of missing people in the whole of Africa.

Edu said that the report of the missing people released by the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) and the Nigerian Red Cross Society (NRCS) was as a result of the insurgency in some parts of the country.

The minister said the issue of missing people had become one of the most critical and long-lasting humanitarian consequences of armed conflicts, and as such called for sober reflections.

Edu said that the present administration was committed to curbing the issue, hence the need to facilitate and strengthen the legal frameworks that would substantially address the incidences of disappearance.

Unemployment rate: Peace Corps Bill draws fresh attention

Nigerians are optimistic that signing the Nigeria Peace Corps bill will remove many unemployed citizens from the streets. This is coming amid controversies over the unemployment rate in the country.

The urgency surrounding the Peace Corps Bill is underscored by the disconcerting unemployment statistics recently released by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS). In the first quarter (Q1) of 2023, the unemployment rate stood at 4.1 percent.

Before concluding his tenure on May 29, 2023, President Buhari received a number of bills for his assent, including the prominent Nigeria Peace Corps bill.

This legislation, sponsored by Senator Ali Ndume, aimed to legitimize the establishment of the Peace Corps as a government entity, affording legal recognition to all serving members of the Peace Corps of Nigeria.
