If Tinubu Believes The Christian Generals In His Army Are Happy, Let Him Think Twice – Captain Aliyu Babangida

According to an article published online by the Punch paper yesterday, Captain Aliyu Babangida (retd.), a former military intelligence officer and CEO of Goldwater Consults, discussed President Bola Tinubu’s involvement in the aftermath of the coup in Niger during an interview with a Punch correspondent. Captain Aliyu Babangida was asked about the frequent military takeovers in West Africa, to which he responded that the main cause is the tendency of West African politicians to govern irresponsibly and in a manner that excludes others, regardless of whether they speak French or English.

He said, “What do you think a Muslim-Muslim presidential ticket sounds like ? Is it inclusive ? Is it not exclusive ? How would you feel like, if as a Christian in the Nigerian military, who has all your life taken risks for your country, playing with bullets and dancing around bandits day and night, became a General leading troops and then all of a sudden, someone, who says he is a politician, who would only be there for four or eight years, whereas, you have been a General for 25 years or so years, comes to insult every risk you have taken with a Muslim-Muslim presidential ticket ?

In his interview with the Punch correspondent, Captain Aliyu Babangida highlighted President Bola Tinubu’s role in the aftermath of the coup in Niger. He explained that the recurring military takeovers in West Africa can be attributed to the fact that many politicians in the region practice irresponsible and exclusive governance. This behavior is not limited to politicians who speak either French or English.

According to Captain Aliyu Babangida, the reason behind the frequent military takeovers in West Africa is the prevalent culture of irresponsible and exclusive governance among politicians in the region. He emphasized that this behavior is not dependent on whether the politician is fluent in French or English. The interview shed light on President Bola Tinubu’s intervention in the aftermath of the coup in Niger, underscoring the need for improved governance practices in West Africa.

He said, “But ideology, whether as Nigeriens versus Nigeria, or anglophone versus francophone, or religiously driven ones like Islam versus Christianity, or Islam versus traditional religion, can last for as long as 500 years if care is not taken.”

Further talking, Captain Aliyu Babangida said, “Now, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, expects the Generals who are Christians in his army, to go and be chasing bullets loyally, right ? Let him keep playing. I know some people do not have the courage to say these things, but that is what is finishing us in this country. If Bola Ahmed Tinubu believes that the Christian Generals in his army are happy, let him think twice.”
