Ex-Petroleum Minister Alison-Madueke charged of Bribery by UK Police

The former Minister of Petroleum, Diezani Alison-Madueke, has been charged by British police with offenses related to bribery. According to the Vanguard, a recent report from Reuters states that UK authorities suspect that she accepted bribes in exchange for granting lucrative oil and gas contracts worth millions of pounds.

She is 63 years old and previously held the position of minister during the administration of former President Goodluck Jonathan from 2010 to 2015. She also served as president of the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC).

Andy Kelly, the Head of the National Crime Agency’s (NCA) International Corruption Unit, commented on the charges, stating, “We believe that Diezani Alison-Madueke used her position of power in Nigeria to receive financial rewards in exchange for awarding multi-million-pound contracts.

These charges mark an important milestone in our extensive and intricate international investigation.”

The NCA alleges that she profited from a variety of illegal benefits, including at least £100,000 in cash, the use of chauffeur-driven cars, private jet flights, luxurious vacations for her family, and multiple London properties.

The charges against her also outline additional financial incentives, such as the provision of furniture, renovation work, and staff for the properties, payment of private school fees, and lavish gifts from luxury brands like Cartier and Louis Vuitton.
