PEPT: What We Saw Was More Of Technicalities Than Substantial Justice' -Sani Umar

Sani Umar, a former spokesperson of the PDP Presidential Campaign Council, has alleged that the final judgment of the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal (PEPT) focused more on technicalities than delivering substantial justice.

He claimed that the Justices of the tribunal seemingly deted from their initial stance of not relying solely on technicalities during the proceedings. Umar further asserted that one of the judges dismissed evidence from Amazon, citing the fact that the person who submitted the document was a member of the opposition party.

During an interview with Arise TV news, Umar expressed his concerns, “Justice Haruna Tsamani, at the outset of the tribunal, had assured Nigerians that the tribunal would prioritize substantial justice over technicalities. This instilled hope and confidence in Nigerians, as they believed that substantial justice would prevail. However, when the final judgment was delivered, it appeared to be more focused on technicalities than delivering substantial justice. I observed several issues, which I have outlined. I witnessed a judge who, while reading the judgment, seemed to struggle to understand it. Additionally, I saw a judge reject evidence from a credible website, Amazon, on the grounds that the person presenting the document had a vested interest, even though the document was verifiable.”
