Ministerial Screening: Unveiling the Concerns Raised by SSS Against Nasir El-Rufai

In a surprising turn of events, the State Security Service (SSS) has put forth allegations against the nomination of former Governor Nasir El-Rufai of Kaduna State, citing human rights abuses, reckless public remarks, and an overwhelming influx of petitions.

According to the Premium Times, the Senate recently confirmed 45 ministerial nominees after a thorough, week-long screening process. However, the confirmation of the remaining three nominees, including Mr. El-Rufai, was withheld.

This decision left many Nigerians astounded, considering El-Rufai’s close alliance and unwavering support for President Bola Tinubu.

His perceived bond with the president became apparent when he revealed during the screening exercise that Mr. Tinubu had personally invited him to collaborate.

As a result, he was treated with the utmost respect by senators, many of whom spoke in his favor, while some even dissuaded their colleagues from questioning him. A petition regarding security concerns raised by Senator Sunday Karimi of Kogi West was swiftly dismissed.

The President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, acknowledged that several petitions had been received against certain ministerial nominees. These complaints, including those against El-Rufai, would be referred to the president and relevant investigative bodies for review.

Despite initially appearing to have a smooth confirmation process, his nomination, along with that of two other nominees, Stella Okotete from Delta State, and Sani Danladi from Taraba had their confirmations withheld pending security clearance.

This decision sparked speculation among Nigerians about the nature of the security concerns raised against El-Rufai.

After speaking to credible sources with access to the security report on El-Rufai, journalists were able to uncover the alleged concerns highlighted by the SSS. However, due to the sensitivity of the matter, the sources requested anonymity.

The allegations against him can be broadly categorized as human rights abuses, indiscreet statements and behavior, petitions, abuse of public trust, and various other issues. It is important to note that journalists could not independently verify these allegations.

One of the major focuses of the SSS report revolves around his alleged “unguarded statements”. However, it is worth mentioning that the SSS did not directly confront El-Rufai with these allegations.

The concerns raised by the SSS have shed light on the complex narrative surrounding his nomination and prompted a closer examination of his past remarks and policies.

As investigations continue, Nigerians eagerly await the outcome of the security clearance and its implications for his potential role as a minister.
