'Chief Awolowo & Azikwe Never Went To London For Campaign After Independence' -Prof Bolaji Akinyemi

Former Minister of Foreign Affairs, Professor Bolaji Akinyemi, asserted that leaders like Chief Awolowo and Azikwe refrained from campaigning abroad after Nigeria’s independence in 1960.

In an Arise TV news interview, he highlighted that the former generation of Nigerian elite politicians held greater significance compared to the current one. He expressed disappointment that 19 Nigerian governors attended a UNDP retreat in Rwanda, deeming it shameful.

He remarked, “During the time of Chief Awolowo, Azikwe, Sardauna, and Balewa, post-independence, they did not undertake campaigns in London, Paris, or the United States. The same was true for Awolowo and Aminu Kano during the second republic. In contrast, the present crop of politicians often criticized as lacking values, patriotism, and integrity, seems to pale in comparison to the old school.”
