INEC should be removed from presidency, by that we will free INEC from politicians- Ebun Adegboruwa

Senior Advocate of Nigeria and Public Affairs Commentator, Ebun Adegboruwa, has called for the independence of the electoral body, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), from the presidency. This statement came in an exclusive interview with The Punch paper following the judgment of the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal in Abuja.

The background for this discussion is the election in which former Governor of Lagos State and National Leader of the All Progressives Congress, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, emerged as the winner. This election faced challenges, with presidential candidates Peter Obi of the Labour Party and Alhaji Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) challenging Tinubu’s victory in the Presidential Election Tribunal.

Adegboruwa’s advice is not only directed at the petitioners and lawyers but also to all proponents of democracy. He stressed the need to focus on INEC, suggesting that the institution responsible for overseeing and conducting elections needs reform. He proposes that INEC should be unbundled, as it currently handles too many responsibilities. He advocates for the independence of INEC from the presidency to ensure that the electoral body operates without political influence.

According to him; “My advice is not just to the petitioners but to the lawyers, and to all lovers of democracy to focus on INEC. The proper institution to help us midwife and drive democracy properly is the electoral body. INEC should be unbundled. There are too many things being done by the body together. Also, we must make INEC independent. There is no reason a president who is interested in an election should be the one to appoint the chairman of the body. We should remove INEC from the presidency, by that; we would free INEC from politicians.”
