Before Akpabio Became Senate President, He Tried To Bribe Abdulrasheed Bawa With $300K—Osuntokun

During an interview with AIT , Akin Osuntokun, the Director General of the Labour Party, stated that Sen. Godswill Akpabio tried to bribe the suspended EFCC chairman, Abdulrasheed Bawa, with $300,000 before he became the Senate president. He added that Akpabio has one of the most repulsive statuses with the anti-corruption agencies.

He further stated that it doesn’t speak well of the country to elect someone who has issues related to corruption in the Senate seat. He added that he’s not criticising him in any way, but he’s saying it as it is.

According to him, “It doesn’t speak well of Nigeria as a country to have as the president of the Senate the person that we have there today. I’m not criticising him by saying that. He has said there are cardinal integrity issues with the anti-corruption agencies. He has one of the most repulsive statuses with the anti-corruption agencies. The last we heard before he became president was that he was trying to bribe. He was invited to the office of the EFCC and was trying to bribe the chairman with $300,000. So it gives us room to pause and wonder: what does it say about the process by the Senate in person? A party that is entitled to produce the president—this was what was being honoured. Why do we always go for the worst? In terms of the credibility and integrity of officers. Why? It’s something that we’re just pushing. Something that we have to give in one way or another at the end of the day.”
