In 2015, it took the coming together of four opposition parties to defeat PDP- Lere Olayinka

Nigerians are expressing their opinions to the judgment of the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal. Lere Olayinka, a prominent figure in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has voiced his opinion, suggesting that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu would not have emerged victorious had opposition parties formed a united front.

According to Vanguard paper, Olayinka pointed out the historical context, citing that in 2015, it required the collaboration of four opposition parties to unseat the PDP from power. Drawing parallels to the 2023 elections, he pointed out that the Labour Party, PDP, and the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) collectively secured over 14 million votes. In contrast, the All Progressives Congress (APC) received just over 8 million votes, resulting in a significant gap of over five million votes.

In his statement on a Silverbird Television program, hub, Olayinka stressed the missed opportunity for the opposition parties to join forces, stressing that they could have easily defeated the APC. He stressed the importance of unity, stating, “In 2015, it took the coming together of four opposition parties to defeat PDP. However, in 2023, the opposition was divided into three – PDP, Labour Party (LP), and New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP).”

Olayinka maintained that the combined votes of the opposition parties amounted to 14,582,740, while the APC secured 8,794,726 votes. This numerical difference of 5,788,014 votes showed his belief that a united opposition front could have secured victory in the election.

He said that, “The difference between APC votes and those of the opposition parties was 5,788,014, meaning that if that opposition parties had presented a common front, the election would have been won so easily.”
