Amidst Niger Coup, Russian President Putin Visits Burkina Faso Military Leader, Traore

On Tuesday, Russian President Vladimir Putin stormed Burkina Faso to meet privately with Captain Ibrahim Traore, the nation’ s interim military commander.

Although the reason for their meeting is yet unknown, rumours suggest that it may have something to do with the ongoing crisis in the Niger Republic.

According to VANGUARD NEWS, the democratically elected President Mohammed Bazoum is still being held captive by the military junta in Niger Republic, which is led by General Tchiani.

Since Tchiani’ s led junta was unable to strike a compromise with the Economic Community of West African States, ECOWAS team about the restoration of democracy in Niger, foreign organizations and other interested parties have expressed alarm.

The junta also intends to terminate all Memorandum of Understanding agreements with France and expel US and French soldiers from the nation.

But according to reports that surfaced on Tuesday, Putin’ s meeting with Traore of Burkina Faso would have been a part of the Russian President’ s preparations to meet with militarily- ruled French- speaking West African nations.

Earlier, the latest diplomatic mission from African nations to Niger, intended to restore constitutional order following a July 26 coup, was denied on Tuesday by the country’ s junta.

According to NAN, the junta refused to enter negotiations despite pressure from the United States and the UN.

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) heads of state are getting ready for a conference on Thursday to talk about their impasse with the Niger junta, which disregarded a deadline of August 6 to return ousted President Mohamed Bazoum. Although ECOWAS has stated that military involvement is a last resort, the possibility will be explored.
