Tinubu: War Not Ideal for Nigeria's Economic Reforms Amid Niger Coup Tension

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has stated that war is not conducive for Nigeria’s ongoing economic reforms, particularly in the midst of the tension surrounding the recent military coup in Niger Republic. The statement was made following a meeting between Tinubu and the US Presidential Envoy and Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs, Ambassador Molly Phee.

According to Daily Post Nigeria, Tinubu emphasized the need for the United States to collaborate with the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) to deepen democracy in the West African sub-region. He highlighted that despite being prepared for all options, ECOWAS is focused on exhaustively exploring diplomatic tools and mechanisms to peacefully address the situation in Niger. While he acknowledged that war is not favorable for economic reforms or the region, he emphasized the importance of defending democracy.

A military junta took control of Niger on July 26, disrupting the democratic governance of the country.
