Senators move motion for suspension of Keyamo’s ministerial screening

The senator representing Abia Central Senatorial District, Darlington Nwokocha, on Monday, moved a motion for the suspension of the ministerial screening of the former Minister of State for Labour and Employment, Festus Keyamo.

The Guardian Nigerian paper report that, After Nwokocha moved the motion, his colleague from Abia-South Senatorial District, Enyinnaya Abaribe, seconded it, leading to a rowdy session at the red chamber.

Nwokocha had accused Keyamo, a minister in President Muhammadu Buhari’s cabinet, of insulting the 9th National Assembly and claiming that the previous legislature was corrupt.

The member claimed that Keyamo declined an invitation to discuss the Special Public Works program during the Buhari administration.

The National Directorate of Employment (NDE), which was under the ministry Keyamo oversaw, was in charge of coordinating the initiative.

2020 saw N52 billion set aside by the federal government for a program that would hire 1,000 youngsters from each of the 774 local governments for a three-month period and pay them each N20,000.

The Senate Public Accounts Committee later launched an investigation into the situation, but the then-minister turned down their invitation.

After that, Senate President Godswill Akpabio decided to put the motion to a voice vote, but the legislators were unable to come to a consensus.

Friday saw Keyamo’s nomination as a minister in the Bola Ahmed Tinubu cabinet.

In a letter to Senate President Godswill Akpabio that was read aloud at Friday’s session, Tinubu made this announcement.

Additionally, the president removed Maryam Shetty’s nomination for a ministerial position in Kano and replaced her with Dr. Mairiga Mahmud.

The nomination of Keyamo and Mahmud came after President Tinubu’s chief of staff, Femi Gbajabiamila, recently submitted the second batch of cabinet nominations.

The second list of the 28 ministry nominees was a continuation of the first list, which Senate President Akpabio had released the week before.
