The newly-sworn-in minister of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Nyesom Wike, has vowed that he would put an end open grazing in Abuja.

Wike made this vow while speaking upon his assumption of office as FCT Minister in Abuja on Monday.

The immediate past Rivers state governor said herdsmen can rear their cattle outside the city but would no longer be allowed to graze on the grasses used for the beautification of the city.

He said, “We will consult with the herdsmen to see how we will stop [open grazing] because we can not allow cows inside the city.

“They can be outside the city because the grasses are outside the city. The grasses in city were planted to beautify the city. It is not that one that they would eat.

“So, we will discuss. Let us say it, you are trying inside the [presidential] Villa for example, and you see about 20,000 to 40,000 goats, if foreigners see that, how would they feel?”

Wike also vowed to crack down on illegal markets in the FCT.

The lawmaker representing Ogun West, Senator Solomon Adeola, has alleged that soldiers of the Nigerian Army were responsible for the death of his aide, Adeniyi Sanni.

The senator made this known in a statement on Monday, signed by his media aide, Kayode Odunaro.

It had been reported that the lawmaker lost his aide, Sanni, in the early hours of Saturday, August 5, 2023.

Senator Adeola had earlier stated that information available to him on the circumstances indicated that Sanni was stopped at a checkpoint around the Ojodu-Berger Area of Lagos on his way to his home at Isheri by “security agents.”

The deceased was asked to provide the documents of the car he was driving, which he did through a call to his wife, who sent all the documents to his phone through a WhatsApp message.

Subsequently, the wife called a while later, and the late Sanni told him soldiers were still checking the vehicle’s documents.

That was the last she heard from her husband, and the remains of Sanni, ridden with bullets, were later discovered at the Toyota Bus Stop area of Oshodi, close to a military barrack.

The Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Abubakar Kyari, on Monday, assumed office and vowed that the Federal Government will ensure that it feeds Nigerians and exports food to earn foreign exchange for the country.

He said these were the targets of his team, stressing that Nigeria had the potential to achieve the set goals.

Kyari spoke at the headquarters of the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security in Abuja during a brief reception organised by the ministry for him and the Minister of State, Aliyu Abdullahi.

He said, “We know the challenge that we face now. Hunger is one of the big problems that we have in this country. When I say hunger, it also means food and there are challenges to food security, insecurity is one of them, flooding is another, there are other issues.

For me and for my colleague – the Minister of State, and even state governors, the biggest hope that we have is the political will driven by President Bola Tinubu.

“I think we have a big challenge but it is not insurmountable. Our target is not only to secure and feed the country but also to export food which we have that potential and it is just there.”
