I’m working for Tinubu Not APC—Wike

Nyesom Wike, minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), says he is working with President Bola Tinubu to achieve the promise of “renewed hope” for Nigerians.

Speaking during an interview with Channels Television on Wednesday, Wike said he is not a member of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and is not working for the party.

Wike’s appointment as minister in a cabinet formed by Tinubu, the APC candidate who won the February presidential election, has elicited mixed reactions. Asked during the interview about his PDP membership status, the former Rivers governor said he remains a member of the party.

5 rail workers killed in Italy train accident

At least five people have died after a train hit railway workers at high speed close to a station in Italy.

The workers, aged between 22 and 52, were replacing part of a track outside the northern city of Turin when they were killed. They had been working on the line between Turin and Milan when the empty passenger train went through Brandizzo station at a reported 160km/h (100mph). Mayor Paolo Bodoni told Italian media an investigation was underway.

Two workers survived unscathed but were taken to hospital for observation. The train driver was treated at the scene for shock but later sent home. He is expected to be questioned later about the accident. In a statement, the Italian railway network (RFI) expressed its “deep sorrow” for the incident. It also sent its “deep condolences” to the families of those who died.

Coup: Rwanda retires 12 generals, Cameroon reshuffles military

The Rwandan and Cameroonian governments have reshuffled their military in what is believed to be a reaction to the recent coups in Niger and Gabon.

According to a Rwandan national newspaper, -Times, the Federal Government approved the retirement of 12 Generals and several officers. The publication stated that the retirements were announced on Wednesday, August 30, in a statement issued by the Rwanda Defence Force.

Among those retired include two four-star generals, James Kabarebe and Fred Ibingira, and two three-star generals, Charles Kayonga and Frank Mushyo Kamanzi. Kabarebe and Kayonga have previously served as Chief of Defence Staff of RDF, while the other two have been service chiefs previously.

Troops Kill 39 Terrorists, Arrest 157, Rescue 109 Hostages

The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) says troops neutralized 39 terrorists, arrested 157 terrorists, and rescued 109 kidnaped hostages across the country.

The troops also arrested 16 suspected oil thieves and recovered stolen products worth over N7.8m. The director, of Defence Media tions, Major General Edward Buba, disclosed this on Thursday during the biweekly update on military operations. He said troops destroyed 71 dugout pits, 36 boats, and 83 storage tanks and recovered 569,400 liters of stolen crude oil, 486,000 liters of illegally refined AGO, and 59,500 liters of PMS.

He said the troops recovered 55 assorted weapons and 96 assorted ammunition. The troops also recovered 12 AK47 rifles, one GPMG, one HK21 gun, one FN rifle loaded with 5 rounds of NATO ammo, two Dane guns, three fabricated rifles, one fabricated pistol, three locally made pistols, 11 AK47 magazines, 71 rounds of 7.62mm special ammo, 22 rounds of 7.62mm NATO, two rounds of 9mm ammo, and one cartridge.
