Top diplomats from the Economic Community of West African States, United Nations and African Union will storm Abuja, Nigeria’s capital, on Thursday (today), to make significant decisions at an Extraordinary Summit on the country’s political progress, according to The PUNCH. The meeting, which is likely to plot the junta’s ouster, will be hosted by President Bola Tinubu, Chairman of the ECOWAS Heads of State and Government.

ECOWAS Leaders

The Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs has advised the Federal Government and ECOWAS against launching a military operation in Niger. Prof. Salisu Shehu, the deputy secretary-general of the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs, issued a statement on Wednesday warning that sanctions like those imposed by ECOWAS would be counterproductive and have “socio-economic negative implications for both Nigerians and Nigeriens especially as we share common history and borders.”

The warning was delivered as Muhammad Sanusi II, a former emir of Kano, and Tchiani met in Niamey on Wednesday to talk about the political impasse caused by the removal of President Bazoum. Social media was flooded with images of the two men, but nothing about the outcome of their meeting was revealed. It was also unclear whether Sanusi had been to Niamey at President Tinubu’s request.
