President Bola Ahmed Tinubu engaged in a telephone conversation with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on Wednesday regarding the military coup in Gabon. This information was conveyed in an official statement released by the presidency, as reported by BBC .
As stated in the statement, President Tinubu is collaborating closely with other African Union Heads of States to establish a comprehensive consensus on the subsequent steps to be taken.
According to an earlier report by BBC , the President of Gabon, Ali Bongo, has been placed under house arrest by military coup leaders in the country. In addition, one of his sons has been apprehended for treason.
This development occurred after military officers in Gabon seized power from President Bongo, who had recently been reelected.
The coup leaders justified their actions by citing severe institutional, political, economic, and social crises as the driving factors for what they termed a ‘necessary’ coup aimed at advancing the West African nation.
Following the takeover, the coup leaders disbanded all of the country’s institutions, including the government, Senate, National Assembly, and Constitutional Court.
