2023 Census: Use Biometric Method, Afenifere Tells Federal Government

The Afenifere has called on the Federal Government of Nigeria to use the biometric method for the 2023 National Population Census. The pan-Yoruba socio-cultural organisation made the call yesterday a communiqué issued and signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Jare Ajayi, after a meeting held held at the Akure residence of its leader, Pa Reuben Fasoranti.

The communique partly reads “Afenifere strongly calls on the Federal Government to make the National Population Commission (NPC) use the same biometric method rather than the manual method that is prone to abuse, as has happened several times in the past, for the coming census.”

According to a report by THE GUARDIAN, the Yoruba Socio-Cultural organization also revealed that it has started making efforts to solve all issues that have negatively affected it in the past two years by reconciling all members.

While speaking, its National leader leader, Pa Reuben Fasoranti, pointed out that the detion from the basic principles of the organization had been the cause of the many problems. He added that the Afenifere is to be brought back to its core values and tradition.

Pa Fasoranti said Afenifere has to be reinvigorated if it must be stronger and able to continue to carry out its mandate of being the Hallmark for the Yoruba race. The elder statesman also revealed that a committee had been set up to achieve reconciliation and unity among members. These were made known the communique.

It partly reads “A noticeable drift away from our core values of consultation, brotherliness, and camaraderie and the traditional process of conducting the business of the organisation, upon which our collegial system of leadership is based, has been severely threatened.

“This threat has been further exacerbated by more recent events, culminating in a fracture of the traditional backbone of the organisation. I am sorry to say, without mincing words, that our organisation is in a sorry state and requires urgent restoration efforts to steer it away from the current trajectory.”
