We Can't Have A Compromised Electoral Body And Be Talking About Democracy- LP Lawyer, Jibrin Okutepa

As the nation awaits the verdict of the five-man panel of Appeal Court Justices currently presiding over the Presidential Election Petitions Tribunal (PEPT) in Abuja, renowned lawyer, and Senior Advocate, Jibrin Okutepa (SAN) has come out to lament the decline in the nation’s democratic process.

In a series of tweets posted on his Twitter handle on Friday, August 4, Okutepa, who is one of the Lead Counsels representing the Labour Party and its flag bearer, Peter Gregory Obi at the presidential election tribunal, argued that Nigeria cannot truly boast of being a democratic country when the nation’s electoral umpire has been compromised by politicians.

Going further, the Senior Advocate urged security agencies to give hope to the Nigerian people by refusing to be partisan in its dealings.

He wrote; “We cannot have a completely compromised electoral body and talk about democracy. Nigerian security institutions must extricate themselves from political slavery and give hope you to Nigerians through their independence and neutrality. We need Independent Institutions.”
