Guber Poll: Edo People Will Oppose Imported Candidate, Group Tells Obaseki

A group under the aegis of People’s Defender Advocate/Civil Society Practitioner, has said that Edo people will oppose the “importation of diaspora” person as governorship candidate in the forthcoming 2024 governorship election.

Daily trust report that, The group also called on the political parties in the state to jettison the clamour for power shift or zoning in their primaries or main election, as it will spell doom for the state.

This was stated in an interview with Daily trust journalist in Benin by the group’s convener, Bishop Osadolor Anthony Ochei, regarding the upcoming 2024 governorship election.

In the run-up to the primaries and general election, he added, the recent occurrence in which the three senatorial districts of South, Central, and North, respectively, staked claims to the single governorship seat and even issued threats, offers cause for concern.

The candidate for governorship “must not be an imported governor who has not in the past contributed to the development of Edo state,” he emphasised.

He needs to meet certain criteria in terms of his education, his involvement in the growth of his community, his experience, his knowledge of both the public and private sectors, and the absence of any criminal convictions.

Bishop Ochei said that the foundation for any society’s and its people’s meaningful advancement is democracy and sound government.

Although there is still a government in place in the state, Ochei lamented, providing the populace with good governance during the final months of the existing government is sacrosanct and should be of great concern to everyone.

In order to stop the flood and steer the state away from a dangerous political trajectory, Bishop Ochei said the group must clarify its position.

The agitations, which are often tribal and sectional, he claimed, continually exacerbate the rifts in society even where they do not already exist, leading to cooperation among the state’s citizens.
